After studying Modern Languages at Cambridge University I went on to do an MA and PhD in Latin American Cultural Studies at Birkbeck College, UK. In 2011 I received my PhD for the thesis ¡Venezuela Progresa! Dictatorship, Spectacle and the Construction of Modernity.

My academic research focuses on the 1950s and 60s avant garde groups, urban space and visual culture in Venezuela, where I have lived since 2005. My website Lisa Blackmore > Caracas cultura visual has a number of my research texts on these topics.

Photography is an extension of my research interests that provides a different discourse and end product for my work.
